Start your teaching journey with the RYA Assistant Instructor Course at Royal Lymington Yacht Club. Perfect for aspiring instructors, this course provides hands-on experience and foundational skills in a supportive and inspiring environment. You’ll work alongside experienced instructors, learn to teach essential techniques, and gain the confidence to assist with training sessions. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Solent, it’s the ideal first step toward becoming an RYA-qualified instructor.

Key Information

Duration: 20hrs

Running Time:

Course 1:  3x 2hr Evenings  6:30 - 8:30 + 14 hrs assisting with WJS or Junior Courses

Course 2: 1x Day 9:30 - 4:30 + 114 hrs assisting with WJS or Junior Courses

Certification: RYA Assistant Instructor

Minimum Standard: RYA Seamanship Skills or Direct Assessment

Course Content

Building on the foundation of your sailing skills, the RYA Assistant Instructor Course at Royal Lymington Yacht Club combines both theory and practical sessions to prepare you for a teaching role. The course covers operational procedures, effective teaching techniques, and group management strategies, ensuring you have the knowledge and confidence to assist in delivering safe and engaging sessions on the water.

With a balance of classroom learning and practical experience, you’ll gain valuable insights into what it takes to lead and inspire others. Guided by experienced instructors, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of how to plan lessons, manage groups, and create a positive learning environment. It’s the perfect opportunity to build your skills and take the first step toward becoming an RYA-qualified instructor in a dynamic and welcoming club setting.

Shadowing Courses and WJS

Appropriate clothing for the conditions.

Hat, Sunscreen (Summer) Gloves, Fleece hat (winter).

The club can provide buoyancy aids.

Helpful Qualifications

RYA Powerboat Level 2

Having the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Qualification is not a requirement of the RYA Assistant Instructor but it is helpful as you will be able to build your driving skills while teaching.

RYA First Aid

Like the RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification the RYA First Aid qualification will be helpful while teaching and be useful at home to help family and friends when neede.

Courses

We offer both adult and junior courses, but sometimes it's nice to learn as a family. We offer the RYA Level 1 course for those looking for this option. Due to the adult syllabus, some younger sailors may struggle to complete all skills, but will still enjoy the course.
